  • Juan Meza, a 1986 PhD CAAM graduate, was recently appointed to the SIAM Board of Trustees. More information can be found in SIAM News, Volume 39, Number 1, Jan-Feb 2006.

    Dr. Meza is currently the head of the High Performance Computing Research Department of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

  • Eva Lee, a 1993 CAAM graduate, is recognized for her health care management research. The news article can be found here.
  • Tim Redl, a 2004 Ph.D. graduate from CAAM, is now an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Houston-Downtown.
  • Zhen Wang has joined the faculty at the Beijing University of Technology. She obtained her PhD from CAAM in 2004.
  • Luis Melara, a 2003 PhD graduate from CAAM, is now an Assistant Professor at the Colorado College.

    Prior to this appointment, Dr. Melara was a postdoc at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

  • Robert Book is recently appointed Senior Associate at The Lewin Group, a health economics research firm in Falls Church, VA.

    He received an MA from CAAM in 1994 and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2002.

  • Mathematics and statistics professor Sue Minkoff and two of her Ph.D. students are engaged in a mathematical geoscience project that will lead to greater understanding of the Earth. Now in its second year, the collaborative project with Rice University is funded by a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation. Dr. Minkoff is currently at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

    Sue Minkoff graduated from CAAM in 1995 under the supervision of Dr. William Symes.

  • The Fifth Feng Kang Prize will be honored to Dr. Tao Tang, Hong Kong Baptist University and Dr. Gang Bao, Michigan State University, USA for their significant contributions in Numerical PDE's and Scientific Computing.

    The Feng Kang is a very prestigious prize given to Chinese numerical mathematicians. Prior winners include Chi-Wang Shu and Thomas Hou.

    Gang Bao is currently Professor of Mathematics at Michigan State University. He holds a 1991 Ph.D. from CAAM.

  • Juan Meza (PhD '86), currently Department Head, High Performance Computing Research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is quoted in the article "Simulators face real problems", Science v. 301, 18 July 2003, pp. 301-302.
  • Christine Ehlig-Economides, who earned her B.A. in Math-Science from Rice University in 71, gave a lecture at Rice University on September 2nd. The latter was one of the first graduates to enter the MASC Program.

    She is currently a full professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Houston, where she has served as Director of the Petroleum Engineering Program as an Adjunct Professor since January 2000.

    Dr. Ehlig-Economides has received numerous awards from the Society of Petroleum Engineers and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2003.

  • Luis Melara, alumni of Rice University, will be giving a special lecture on Simulation of an Austenite-twinned-Martesite Interface on May 6, 2003.
  • Lynn Laverty Elsenhans, who earned a BA in MASC at Rice in 1978, will return to Houston to serve as country chair for Shell Oil. Acting as Shell’s top official in the U.S., she will also assume the title of president of Shell Oil Products U.S. – a position that is responsible for overseeing the company's marketing and refining business.

    Lynn, a former CEO of Shell Oil Co.'s Deer Park Refinery and a Rice University graduate, will become one of the highest-ranking women executives for a major company in Houston. Rice News Article.

  • Robert Book has recently earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

    Robert earned an MA from CAAM in 1994. He is currently working as a Research Analyst at The CNA Corporation, a non-profit research and analysis organization in Alexandria, Virginia.

  • Lynn Laverty Elsenhans has been named to the Rice University board of trustees. Rice News Article.

    Lynn earned a BA in MASC in 1978. She currently resides in Singapore where she is president of the East Zone of Shell International Petroleum Co., Ltd.

  • Marielba Rojas has accepted a tenure track position at Wake Forest University.

    Marielba earned a PhD from CAAM in 1999. After four months as a Post Doc in the Department of Informatics at the University of Bergen in Norway, she took a position as a Post Doc in the Parallel Algorithms Project at CERFACS, in Toulouse, France. Next Spring (2002) she will join the Department of Mathematics at Wake Forest as an Assistant Professor.

  • Vladimir Rokhlin has been awarded the 2001 AMS Steele Prize.

    On January 11, 2001 the Council of the American Mathematical Society ( AMS ) awarded the 2001 Leroy P. Steele Prize for a Seminal Contribution to Research to Vladimir Rokhlin for his 1987 paper with Leslie F. Greengard introducing a fast multipole method. Additional information on this paper.

  • Rich Lehoucq has been awarded a 2000 DOE PECASE.

    On October 23, 2000 President Clinton named Rich Lehoucq as one of 59 recipients of the fifth annual Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on young professionals at the outset of their independent research careers. Rich was nominated for his innovative and creative approaches to numerical software with a solid understanding of mathematics and computer science, for his software contributions for the solution of eigensystems of equations, and for his impact on scientists both at Sandia National Laboratories and in the broader professional community.

  • David Dobson is the first recipient of the Felix Klein Prize.

    The Felix Klein Prize, presented by the European Mathematical Society (EMS), recognizes exemplary achievement in bringing the power of modern mathematics to bear on contemporary industrial problems. The prize was presented in July 2000 at the Third European Congress of Mathematics.

    David earned a PhD from CAAM in 1990 and was an early contributor to TRIP (The Rice Inversion Project). He was one of the first IMA Industrial Postdocs and is currently Professor of Mathematics at Texas A&M University.
