- Dr. Richard Tapia is awarded the 2004 SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession.
The Distinguished Service to the Profession of Applied Mathematics prize, established by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 1985, is in the form of a certificate awarded every year at the SIAM Annual Meeting. It is awarded to an applied mathematician who has made distinguished contributions to the furtherance of applied mathematics on the national level. This year's SIAM Annual Meeting was held in Portland, Oregon, July 12-16, 2004.

- Dr. Mark Embree is the winner of the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize for 2004.
The prize, which includes a $2,000 award, is given annually by the Rice chapter of Phi Beta Kappa - the national fraternity whose members were the top students in their graduating classes. The award is designed to recognize young faculty and is open only to assistant professors.
