  • Dr. Richard Tapia is awarded the 2004 SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession.

    • The Distinguished Service to the Profession of Applied Mathematics prize, established by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 1985, is in the form of a certificate awarded every year at the SIAM Annual Meeting. It is awarded to an applied mathematician who has made distinguished contributions to the furtherance of applied mathematics on the national level. This year's SIAM Annual Meeting was held in Portland, Oregon, July 12-16, 2004.

  • Dr. Mark Embree is the winner of the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize for 2004.

    • The prize, which includes a $2,000 award, is given annually by the Rice chapter of Phi Beta Kappa - the national fraternity whose members were the top students in their graduating classes. The award is designed to recognize young faculty and is open only to assistant professors.

  • CAAM Graduates Joanna Papakonstantinou and Mili Shah are elected as GSA (Graduate Student Association) Officers. Joanna, who served as Vice President last year, is the elected President. Mili is the elected Treasurer; this is the first year that she is serving in this position.
