Abstract:
Oil and gas companies employ many geophysicists (AKA physicists, applied mathematicians, electrical engineers, etc.) that use seismic data to explore for and understand hydrocarbon reservoirs. I will give a brief overview of reflection seismology and describe some of the mathematical problems encountered in imaging the subsurface. If time permits, I will share some experiences I've had in the last 3 years while working at Shell and how it compares to my days in academia and a national lab
