Almost every Monday, we have the CAAM colloquium, where faculty or people from outside the department come to talk about their research. Some times it is in line with the research at CAAM, other times it offers an interesting view of what researchers and scientists are doing in other disciplines.
Even though it may be difficult for graduate students to understand fully the talks, especially in the first years, we are strongly encouraged to assist to all them. Colloquia provide a nice way of getting to know the latest findings in other interesting fields and also to learn how people present their work.
Every Wednesday at noon, we have the Graduate Seminar, nicknamed "Lunch talk", where graduate students talk about their current research, sharing and asking for new ideas.
Sometimes faculty also participate, and explain their area of expertise. This is specially useful for first-year graduate students that are looking for topics and advisors.
Given the great diversity of research interests, students strive to keep their presentations at a level such that everybody can understand. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to give presentations in a friendly and positive environment.
Typically, two graduate students are in charge of organizing semi-monthly outings.
We usually go out to have dinner and then have some other activity. In the past we've gone bowling, ice and roller skating, etc.
Also, there is a departmental party every semester where students, faculty and staff get to eat together and have a good time.
