  RICE UNIVERSITY
VIGRE Undergraduate Summer Research Mentor: "Exploring the Mechanical and Biochemical Effects of Intestinal Edema on Smooth Muscle Contraction"  (Summer 2011)
Mentored a group of four undergraduate students on a summer research project where the goal was to create a computational model of the contraction-relaxation of a gastrointestinal smooth muscle cell.  The second goal was to then use this model to test how the contraction process is affected by intestinal edema, a medical condition referring to the excess accumulation of fluid in the interstitial spaces between the gastrointestinal muscle cells. The students utilized MATLAB to code up a two-dimensional model of a contracting smooth muscle cell.  The results of their work is summarized in the link above.

Summer Math Days Coordinator: (Summer 2011)
This is a 3-day program for local high school students where we expose them to different topics and applications of mathematics, by having professors, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students present on a topic in math that they love.  We also give them a taste of college life at Rice by taking them on a campus tour and having an undergraduate speak to them about the college application process.

WRAP (Worthing Rice Apprenticeship Program) Mentor: (Fall 2010, Spring 2011)
This is a 3-hour long, weekly program for high school students from Worthing HIgh School held at Rice, where the students learn about and conduct research projects in the field of neuroscience.

Faculty Associate, Brown College (Fall 2010 - present)
Rice has a residential college system, and each college has associates, which are Rice faculty members, Rice alumni, and Houston community members who interact with and mentor the students of that college.  I am an associate with Brown College, and I enjoy having lunch with the students at their servery each week, attending Brown College social events, and participating in Orientation Week activites for new students entering Brown.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill:
Coach for the Mathematical Contest in Modeling  (Spring 2008)
I assisted with the coaching of several teams from UNC-Chapel Hill for this mathemaics contest.  The contest is quite open-ended, so to better prepare students, each week one of the coaches would have the students learn about and practice utilizing a different modeling technique.

Volunteer for Family Math Day (Fall 2009)
This was a one-day program held at the Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  It was an event for parents to bring young children to learn about mathematics by visiting different exhibits.

Volunteer for MathKits (Spring 2009)
I prepared and presented a hands-on activity on the Platonic Solids to a group of local elementary school students.

Volunteer for Sonia Kovalevski Day
(Spring 2009)
This was a one day event at UNC-Chapel Hill for local, women high school students.  The students participated in various presentations on different topics in mathematics and also had the opportunity to interact with and hear the experiences of women professors, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students.
