Now that all the tests are done, almost everyone passed. That's good. That means hopefully my exams won't be too terribly difficult. But I guess we'll find that out when the exams happen.
If you want solutions to the second test, here they are. Sorry about the wait. I would like anyone who didn't pass the second or third test to review their exponential/logarithm rules and their integration. Please get this stuff down before the exams, or else you may regret it.
If you feel like looking, here are the answers to the first proficiency test. Six people out of the thirty-eight who took it passed. The average was 6.05 out of 10. This of course means the test was too hard. Looking at the tests, it seems to me that people who got seven or above did very well, and will almost certainly pass the second time around. If you made less than seven, you need to review the material more. Please email me if you have any questions or things you would like clarified/explained. If you didn't pass (9 out of 10) this time, there will be two more chances. We will discuss the details of that on Monday.
Please note:There was an error in the proficiency test review sheet. Sorry I didn't notice it until now. Basically, the trig function problem (0.1 #10) was stated wrong, and didn't have a very nice solution. I corrected it (the coefficients on both the sine and cosine should be square root of two). Sorry if anyone spent too much time on that one. The link below goes to a corrected review sheet.
I have just finished solutions to the review sheet. It is there mostly so you can check your work. Note that many of the integrals are very difficult. This is primarily to make sure you review all the relevant stuff thoroughly for tomorrow. As always, if you have any questions, email me. (Also, if you want to turn integral #4 into a more reasonable problem for additional practice, switch the x and the r in the square root.)
The proficiency test is a review of material contained in math 124 and
125 that is relevant to this class. And by relevant, I mean that
you need to be pretty familiar and comfortable with this material to do
well in this class. Here's a review sheet
covering this material. The proficiency test itself will be a twenty
minute quiz type thing that I'll give at the end of class on Friday the
fourth of April. I will grade it strictly, with no partial credit.
(Don't worry, I'm ordinarily a big fan of partial credit and it will most
certainly exist on the regular exams.) The test will be scored out
of ten points. Your goal is nine out of ten. There will be
two makeup tests the second week of classes, Tuesday and Wednesday at eight
a.m. If at any time you get nine or higher on the test, you will
be given a flat 30 points. If you do not get nine or higher after
three tries, your recorded score will be the sum of your three attempts.
