Many engineering and science applications lead to optimization problems in
which the evaluation of the objective function or of constraint functions require
expensive simulations. These optimization problems arise, for example, in the form of
optimal design, optimal control, or parameter estimation problems and the
complex simulations are often tied to the solution of systems of
partial differential equations.
The numerical solution of such optimization problems requires that
the computational simulations are run repeatedly at simulation
inputs generated by the optimization algorithm.
In many optimization applications it is impossible to run high fidelity simulations because
of computing time and other resource constraints, and the high fidelity simulations must be
replaced by some type of reduced order models.
The integration of reduced order models with optimization algorithms, the convergence
analysis of such integrated algorithms and their use in engineering and science applications
raises many challenging questions.
This workshop brings together researchers who work on model management
approaches in optimization and on the development of reduced order models for optimization,
as well as researchers and practitioners involved in the application of reduced order
model approaches for the simulation and optimization of complex systems.
With this workshop we hope to foster exchange on the development of reduced
order model techniques and model management approaches in optimization
and their integration into more efficient computational methods with broader

During the conference, continental breakfast will be served
in Duncan Hall in front of the lecture room DH1064;

For other meals, Houston offers a huge selection of restaurants.
For example, there are several
restaurants in the Rice Village just east of Rice
University, approx. 1.5 miles from Duncan Hall and from the
Hilton Houston Plaza/Medical Center.
For those who come early or stay longer, there are many
things to do. Below are a few examples.

If you are interested in bird watching or like to see alligators
in the wild, check out the
Brazos Bend State Park (Elm Lake), which is
about 1.5 hours southwest of Houston (take US59 south,
after about an 1hr there will be a sign to mark the Brazos Bend State
Johnson Space Center Houston is
about 1 hour south of Houston (take Interstate 45 toward Galveston).
