Dr. Mark Embree - Scientific graphics: theory and practice

The graphical presentation of scientific data plays an essential role in applied and computational mathematics. Your calculations may easily involve trillions of numbers that you must summarize in carefully designed plots that clearly and concisely illuminate.

Despite the importance of visual presentation, our field is rife with examples of ill-conceived illustrations. Among the cardinal sins committed by such graphics: data-impoverished plots, poor use of graphical elements (line widths, font sizes, colors), and overuse of "chart junk" -- extraneous legends, arrows, color bars, and other features that steal attention from your hard-computed data.

In this informal talk, we shall first describe some of the common traits shared by compelling scientific plots. Our guide will be Edward Tufte's classic text, " The Visual Display of Quantitative Information". After addressing these theoretical concerns, we will move to a more practical issue: the use of MATLAB to create graphics consistent with our theoretical principles. [Slides]

Please join us for a discussion group about one of the trickier aspects of research: collecting and organizing scholarly articles. The intent of this meeting is to learn what has and has not worked for graduate students as they have prepared their theses. (Don't repeat our mistakes!) The officers will direct the discussions, which are intended to be highly interactive with the attendees. Hopefully we will all learn a trick or two for making our research efforts a bit easier!

Discussions will include:
  • how to use the resources available to Rice students to get hard-to-obtain articles and books
  • software to help you organize your collected materials
  • how to use BibTeX effectively
