Welcome to the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice. The CAAM department is a close-knit community of faculty and students working toward solving challenges through applied mathematics, with the support of a staff dedicated to the department's mission.
An undergraduate degree in computational and applied mathematics can open doors to unlimited career possibilities. Our students go to work in the oil and gas and finance industries and in the medical field, to name a few. They go on to graduate school and start their own businesses. The flexibility of the degree allows for exploration in other disciplines as well.
Research in CAAM ranges from design and analysis of mathematical optimization algorithms to modeling complex phenomena in areas such as climate science and real-time surgery to operations research and industrial engineering. Applications include large-scale problems and their applications to science and engineering, compressed sensing, deep learning and machine learning, addressing problems in porous media and fluid mechanics, and geophysical modeling.
Seminars, colloquia and special lectures feed the department with new ideas and perspectives. Speakers from other universities, industry, and other departments at Rice bring fresh insights into the problems our faculty and students are addressing in their research. Weekly colloquia give graduate students the chance to present their work and practice their speaking skills.
