Guodong “Gordon” Pang will join the Rice faculty as a professor of computational and applied mathematics, effective Jan. 1.

Most recently, Pang served as a professor in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Penn State University, where he was also joint professor of mathematics and affiliated with the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences. He joined the Penn State faculty in 2010 after earning his Ph.D. in Operations Research from Columbia University.

His research interests include applied probability, stochastic process limits theory, stochastic control, stochastic networks, queueing systems and stochastic epidemic models. He works with applications in service systems, healthcare, energy systems, telecommunications and epidemiology, and has broad interests in financial engineering, simulation and numerical methods.

Pang’s research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Army Research Office. He has served as associate editor of the journal Queueing Systems since 2014, and is also an associate editor at Stochastic Systems and Stochastic Models.

He is a member of INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and Management Science), Applied Probability Society, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Bernoulli Society, and Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematicians.
