Richard Tapia, University Professor and the Maxfield-Oshman Professor in Engineering at Rice, has been named to the Joint Advisory Board of the Education Research Centers (ERC), three organizations that study Texas education.
Tapia will join a 10-member board that sets policy for the ERCs, which were created by the Texas Legislature in 2006.
Of his goals as part of the board, Tapia said, “I want all individuals studying education policy to be aware of the demographics of Texas and make sure every component receives quality education. We have to have uniform education across the entire population.”
The centers, which are at Texas A&M University, the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas at Dallas, also serve as repositories for educational data from the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The database contains information on pre-kindergarten through postsecondary students as well as faculty, staff, financial and organizational information and is made available to researchers.
