Re: Certificates of Excellence

Congratulations! Your chapter was recently awarded the Sigma Xi Certificate of Excellence for outstanding chapter activity during the year ending June 30, 1999. Certificates are awarded for exceptional activity and innovative chapter programs, particularly those that address the four major issues at the foundation of the Society's mission: honor in science and engineering, science education, science policy and the public understanding of science.

As you know, Sigma Xi is committed to supporting the research enterprise, and the strength of this organization comes from the strong foundation of chapter-based programs. The grassroots nature of the Society allows us to "think globally and act locally."

The selection process for these awards began with the annual reports of chapter activity that were submitted early in the summer of 1999. The directors of each region reviewed these reports and recommended five chapters to the Committee on Qualifications and Membership. From the recommended chapters, the committee chose ten to receive the Certificate of Excellence.

We are very proud of your chapter's accomplishments and wish to commend you and your colleagues for a job well done. We look forward to watching your programs continue to succeed and hope that your accomplishments will help your chapter to grow and to flourish.

Rice University-Texas Medical Center Chapter-The chapter joined the national "Partners in Education" program, adopting Northbrook Middle School as a focus for promoting a better understanding of science among sixth- through eighth-graders. Plans call for development of interactive distance learning, with some programs broadcast directly from researchers' labs.
